IT’S ALL IN YOUR ATTITUDE

By Randy Carlson

Comedian Jackie Mason once remarked, “I have enough money to last me the rest of my life… unless I buy something.”

Isn’t it true? It’s not the money itself, but the spending of it, that gets us into trouble. How we handle our money is a prime stress test for our spiritual heart. 1 Timothy 6:10 provides the key principle:

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Sorrows that cause you to be spiritually unhealthy will result from a wrong attitude about money. Are these attributes present in your life or family relationships?

  • Being greedy, always wanting more
  • Hoarding
  • Possessing and not sharing with those in need
  • Disagreeing as a couple about how to manage money
  • Failing to develop a budget or follow through on a spending plan
  • Failing to save for the future

If any of these are true for you, they are actually illness indicators that negatively impact your life, and wound your spiritual heart.

Instead, God desires you to have His outlook regarding money and possessions. He tells us in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (NIV).

When you follow God’s Word in your finances, you will bring pleasure to Him and benefit to yourself.
